Advent Themes: Waiting; Expectation; Judgment; Hope; Longing; Joy
Christmas Themes: Word incarnate; Celebration; Joy; Salvation
The book of Zephaniah, though brief, is comprehensive, embracing the two great themes of prophetic teaching: judgment and salvation – both extending to all nations. Zephaniah predicts that God has bigger plans than the end of the world. The Day of the Lord is at hand, a terrible day for those who have rebelled. It will not stop at Judah – the whole world will be punished. Zephaniah’s message was not just for ancient Judah but also for our day. Doom is eminent but Zephaniah’s message also includes God’s restoration of all things to a world of peace and joy.
