Going For Gold
|Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, and into an inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade. This inheritance is kept in heaven for you, who through faith are shielded by God’s power until the coming of the salvation that is ready to be revealed in the last time. In all this you greatly rejoice… (1Peter 1:3-6A)Summer 2012 was an unforgettable summer – the kind of summer that comes along just once in a lifetime. Sadly though, the Olympics and the Paralympics have long been over. The euphoria from the Games has died down. London 2012 had its closing ceremonies, our closing ceremony for CCiL’s summer outreach initiative, Going For Gold, was marked by The Finale Concert ‘Nevergonnastop’. The concert showcased just some of the great wealth of talent that God has blessed our church with. And in the same way, all of our events highlighted how the church family used their gifts for God this summer. God has blessed us so abundantly in the giftings he has given us, and by pouring his grace upon each event.
Going for Gold took one year to prepare for, and the events spanning over 2 months represent a lot of time and effort and hard work. We praise God for the teams of people who worshipped God through: preparing food, music performances, tournaments, fun days for kids and the youth, playing sports… We think of the hundreds of lives who were touched through Going For Gold. Through serving alongside church family, we were both blessed and a blessing to new friends and old. The Big Screen Events allowed us to meet people from across the world, as far as America and Mexico, many of whom were moved by the hospitality they received through free food, friendly conversation and the chance to watch the Opening and Closing ceremonies on a big screen and in community. We think of the kids at the fun days who said they wanted to learn more about Jesus. We think of the friends we fellowshipped with through playing sports.
Please continue to pray for the lives, both within and outside the church, that have been touched in some way through Going for Gold.
But what inspired us to put ourselves through all the hard work and stress? Why did we give up of so much of our time and resources this summer?
Jesus’ death on the cross and his resurrection are our inspiration, for it is through his sacrifice that God achieved forgiveness of our sins for us and instead of us. When God looks upon us, he sees the perfection that Jesus won for us by dying instead of us on the cross.
We worked so hard over the summer, because God has given us a living hope through Jesus, an eternal hope more precious than gold, more precious than any gold medal.
London 2012 and Going for Gold may be over, but the Finale Concert’s theme was ‘nevergonnastop’. And so our challenge is to keep celebrating God’s goodness by using our gifts for Him, and by sharing his love with the people of London. Let’s keep living our lives for him in gratitude for what he achieved for us on the cross. Let’s remember God’s amazing love for us and keep running the ‘race of faith’. Please take some time to ponder on how God is calling you to run this race for him.
Team GB had a short-lived victory parade. The church, Team God’s Beloved, have an eternal victory parade, and at the head is Jesus leading the way. May we continue to spread everywhere the fragrance of the knowledge of Christ.
…thanks be to God, who always leads us in triumphal procession in Christ and through us spreads everywhere the fragrance of the knowledge of him. For we are to God the aroma of Christ among those who are being saved and those who are perishing. (2Cor. 2:14-15)
